Bringing “Inferno, Arnhem Land” to Life: A Large-Scale Print and Framing Project for Shane Fitzgerald

At Prolab, we’re proud to help artists turn their vision into reality using our fine art printing and expert finishing services. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with visual artist Shane Fitzgerald on a stunning piece titled Inferno, Arnhem Land — a vibrant, immersive image that demanded meticulous care and technical precision at every stage.
File Handling and Pre-Production Checks
The project began with file coordination between Shane and our Digital Services Manager, Brian Peel. As Shane is based remotely in Tasmania, initial file transfers faced challenges due to limited internet connectivity. After a few attempts, Shane successfully uploaded the high-resolution TIFF file via Dropbox.
However, a mix-up in the initial upload led to a quick back-and-forth — the first file was a different version than what had originally been previewed by the team. Once clarified, Shane sent through the correct version of Inferno, Arnhem Land, and we were ready to proceed.
Image Size and Printing Specifications
After confirming the artwork dimensions at 1445 x 950 mm, we moved forward with the printing process. Given the intensity of the fiery colour palette and the need for deep blacks and rich contrast, we selected Ilford Crystal Gloss photographic paper. This high-gloss surface is ideal for achieving ultra-vibrant detail in large-format prints.
The print was then mounted to Dibond, an aluminium composite panel known for its rigidity and smoothness — a perfect substrate for a professional, gallery-standard finish.
Framing with UV Protection
To complete the work, the mounted print was framed behind UV70 glazing. This specialised glazing provides enhanced protection from ultraviolet light while preserving clarity and colour vibrancy. The piece was finished with a minimal black box frame to maintain a clean, contemporary look that complements the dramatic tones of the image.
The Final Result
The final framed artwork is a commanding presence — glowing with energy, depth, and motion. The combination of Crystal Gloss paper, Dibond mounting, and UV glazing ensures not only a premium visual impact but also long-term preservation suitable for exhibition or collection display.
