Large Format Fine Art Printing and Custom Framing in Brisbane

When a client wants to reproduce an artwork at more than two metres high, every production decision matters. The print surface, image preparation, frame construction and hanging system all need to work together.

For this recent Brisbane project, Prolab reproduced a previously digitised abstract artwork at an impressive 2200 mm high × 1673 mm wide. We printed the image at full scale onto a rigid aluminium composite panel and completed the piece with a custom timber frame.

The result is a striking large-format artwork that combines vivid colour, fine detail and a clean contemporary finish.

Reproducing an Original Artwork at More Than Two Metres High

The project began with a high-resolution artwork scan that Prolab had previously completed for the client. The goal was to create a full-size reproduction while preserving the original artwork’s expressive floral forms, delicate line work and subtle tonal transitions.

At 2200 × 1673 mm, the finished artwork required a production method that could deliver both image quality and structural stability. The clients initially considered canvas and aluminium panel options before choosing the rigid panel approach.

Printing onto an aluminium composite panel allowed us to produce the artwork at the full requested size while creating a smooth, contemporary presentation. The rigid surface also suited the fine black line work and broad areas of soft colour throughout the image.

Careful Artwork Preparation Before Large Format Printing

Large-scale fine art printing starts well before the printer begins production.

Because the abstract artwork could be viewed in more than one direction, we carefully confirmed the correct orientation before preparing the final production file. The client selected a portrait presentation with the main floral forms positioned toward the upper left of the composition.

This step may seem small, but it becomes critical when producing an artwork more than two metres high. Our team checks image orientation, proportions, crop, colour and final dimensions before committing a large-format artwork to production.

Full-Size Printing on Aluminium Composite Panel

The finished artwork measured:

2200 mm high × 1673 mm wide

The rigid aluminium composite panel made it possible to maintain the full requested dimensions. Earlier production discussions also considered a reduced-size stretched canvas, but the aluminium panel allowed the clients to retain the original scale of the project.

For oversized artwork reproduction, rigid panels offer several advantages:

  • a smooth and stable printing surface;
  • strong reproduction of fine detail;
  • a clean, modern appearance;
  • excellent dimensional stability; and
  • compatibility with custom timber framing.

The finished piece demonstrates how large format artwork printing can retain a sense of delicacy even at architectural scale.

Custom Timber Framing for an Oversized Artwork

A print of this size needs more than an attractive frame. The moulding also needs enough structural strength to support the completed piece.

The clients wanted a slim, contemporary timber appearance. After considering several mouldings, we selected a deeper profile measuring approximately 28 mm wide × 44 mm deep. The narrower face keeps the frame visually refined, while the additional depth provides greater strength for such a large artwork.

The warm natural timber complements the artwork’s pink, red, orange and neutral tones without competing with the composition.

From the front, the frame creates a restrained border around the image. From the side, its added depth gives the finished artwork a substantial architectural presence.

Building a Secure Hanging System

Large custom-framed artwork also requires careful planning behind the scenes.

Our framing team fitted secure hanging hardware to the timber structure so the completed artwork can be installed safely. As the photographs show, the rear remains clean and professionally finished, while the fixing points sit securely within the frame construction.

For oversized framed artwork, we consider the total dimensions, weight, wall type and intended installation location before recommending a hanging method.

A Statement Piece Designed for a Commercial Interior

At more than two metres high, the completed artwork creates immediate visual impact. The large scale allows viewers to appreciate both the bold floral forms and the fine gestural line work that runs through the composition.

This project also highlights the benefit of keeping the full artwork workflow under one roof. Prolab and Jubilee Framers can coordinate:

fine art scanning and artwork digitisation → image preparation → large format printing → custom framing → hanging preparation

By managing each stage together, we can make sure the print dimensions, substrate, frame construction and final presentation all work as one complete system.
