From Canvas to Vinyl: Producing Custom Art Discs for Valentino Rembrandt Koch

A Unique Collaboration with a Brisbane Contemporary Artist

At Prolab, we work closely with artists to translate creative ideas into physical outcomes that enhance and support their vision. Our recent collaboration with Valentino Rembrandt Koch is a great example of how innovative production techniques can elevate an already distinctive body of work.

Valentino is a Queensland-based, Brisbane artist known for his bold, colourful and concept-driven practice. His work has been described as “preposterous, obscure and original,” combining humour, wordplay and layered meaning across painting, photography and mixed media.

For this project, Valentino approached Prolab with a concept inspired by vinyl records—transforming each artwork into a physical “LP” format that complements the visual storytelling of his series.

The Concept: Turning Artwork into Vinyl-Inspired Objects

Valentino’s idea was to create a set of circular “records” that visually reference traditional vinyl LPs, complete with:

  • Printed groove patterns
  • A central label design
  • A consistent black finish
  • A precise centre hole for authenticity

This approach aligns with Valentino’s broader artistic practice, which often explores playful reinterpretations and layered concepts derived from wordplay and visual symbolism.

The goal was not just to print artwork, but to produce an object that feels familiar, tactile and conceptually linked to music culture.

Material Selection: Why We Chose Black Alupanel

To achieve the desired look and durability, we recommended:

  • 3mm Black Alupanel (Aluminium Composite Panel)
  • CNC-cut to 600mm diameter
  • Precision 14mm centre hole

This material offered several advantages:

  • Clean, rigid structure with no warping
  • Subtle sheen similar to vinyl records
  • Cost-effective for batch production
  • Excellent surface for UV direct printing

Unlike acrylic, Alupanel allowed us to maintain consistency across all pieces while keeping production efficient.

Production Process: SwissQ UV Printing & CNC Cutting

We produced the final pieces using our SwissQ UV flatbed printer, combined with precision CNC routing.

1. CNC Cutting

Each disc was cut to exact specifications:

  • 600mm circular profile
  • Clean edge finish
  • Accurate centre hole placement

2. UV Direct Printing

We printed directly onto the surface of the Alupanel, including:

  • Fine groove linework to simulate vinyl texture
  • A centre label design with consistent colour across all pieces

UV printing allowed us to achieve:

  • Sharp detail reproduction
  • Strong adhesion to the substrate
  • A durable, matte finish suitable for display

Test & Refinement: Ensuring Print Quality

Before committing to the full production run, we completed a test print to assess:

  • Line clarity of the groove detail
  • Reproduction of raster artwork
  • Overall visual balance and realism

This step ensured the final pieces met both technical standards and Valentino’s creative expectations.

The Final Outcome

The completed set of 10 vinyl-style discs successfully bridges the gap between fine art and object-based design.

Each piece:

  • Maintains the integrity of the original artwork
  • Introduces a sculptural, physical presence
  • Enhances the narrative of the series through format and material

The result is a cohesive and visually striking collection that reflects Valentino’s bold, experimental style and interest in layered meaning.
