Exhibition Printing for the Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards 2026
Prolab recently completed the photographic print production for the Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards 2026, producing a series of exhibition-ready photographic panels for the Museum of Brisbane.
Now on display as part of the Everyday Brisbane exhibition at Brisbane City Hall, the finished works showcase Brisbane through the eyes of photographers who captured the people, places and moments that give the city its character.
For Prolab, the project brought together professional photographic printing, image preparation, Alupanel mounting, protective lamination and custom exhibition hanging systems — all within a particularly tight production schedule.
Producing 10 Exhibition-Ready Photographic Panels
The Museum of Brisbane required 10 photographs produced at varying final dimensions, with each image prepared specifically for its allocated exhibition size.
We produced every photograph as an Ilford Satin Lustre photographic print, mounted it to 3 mm Alupanel, applied a Sandtex protective laminate, and finished each panel with an aluminium Z-Bar hanging system.
This combination creates a clean, contemporary presentation that works particularly well for photographic exhibitions.
The rigid Alupanel substrate keeps the finished photographs flat and stable without the visual weight of a conventional frame. Sandtex laminate adds a refined matte surface while improving durability and helping to reduce reflections from gallery lighting.
Preparing Photographic Files for Large-Format Exhibition Printing
Producing exhibition prints involves more than simply enlarging a supplied image.
Once the Museum of Brisbane supplied the final 10 photographs, our team reviewed each file against its nominated output dimensions. The brief required us to preserve the complete composition of each photograph, so we scaled the images proportionally without cropping.
During our pre-production assessment, we identified several files that would benefit from additional preparation before enlargement.
We carried out the necessary image upscaling, colour preparation and minor image adjustments in-house, helping us achieve a cleaner and more refined result at exhibition size while retaining the character of the original photography.
The process is an important part of professional large-format photo printing. Upscaling cannot create genuine detail that was never captured in the original file, but careful image preparation can significantly improve how a photograph reproduces when enlarged.
Digital Proofing Before Production
With multiple photographs, different orientations and varying finished sizes, an organised approval process was essential.
We prepared a clearly labelled digital contact sheet showing the 10 photographs at their nominated final output dimensions. The Museum of Brisbane could then review the image selection, orientation and sizing before we completed production.
After approval, we proceeded with printing and finishing the complete set.
This workflow allowed both teams to confirm the important production details quickly while keeping the project moving towards its fixed installation deadline.
A Tight Turnaround for a Brisbane Exhibition
Timing presented one of the biggest challenges of this project.
Because the photographs depended on the competition judging process, the Museum could not supply the final production files until 17 July. The completed panels needed to arrive at the Museum of Brisbane by 30 July, ready for installation the following day and the exhibition opening on 1 August.
That left a narrow window for file checking, image preparation, proofing, approval, photographic printing, mounting, laminating, fabrication of the hanging systems, finishing and delivery.
By planning the workflow in advance and completing the pre-production work as soon as the final files arrived, we kept the project on schedule and delivered the finished photographic panels to Brisbane City Hall ahead of installation.
Custom Aluminium Z-Bar Hanging Systems
The exhibition also required a reliable and consistent method for installing the photographic panels.
The Museum selected an aluminium interlocking Z-Bar hanging system, with the wall sections pre-drilled with 5 mm fixing holes.
We positioned the Z-Bars consistently across the individual panels wherever their differing dimensions allowed, giving the Museum team a predictable reference point when marking the exhibition wall before the photographs arrived.
The resulting system allows the Alupanel photographs to sit cleanly against the wall while maintaining the minimalist presentation suited to a contemporary photographic exhibition.
