Exhibition Printing & Mounting for WOW Australia: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

At Prolab, we recently completed a series of mounted photographic prints for WOW Australia (Women of the World), showcasing a streamlined and professional approach to exhibition production.

High-Quality Photo Printing for Exhibition Display

For this project, we produced a series of portrait prints using Ilford Lustre Satin Photo Paper, a premium material known for its:

  • Rich colour reproduction
  • Subtle satin finish (reducing glare under gallery lighting)
  • Excellent detail retention for photographic work

Each image was carefully checked and prepared to ensure consistency across the entire exhibition set—an essential step when producing cohesive gallery displays.

Precision Mounting to Rigid Substrates

Once printed, the artworks were mounted to 6mm craftwood (MDF) to provide rigidity and durability.This mounting method offers several advantages:

  • Prevents warping over time
  • Creates a solid, professional feel
  • Ensures longevity for touring exhibitions
  • Provides a clean, frameless presentation

The addition of a white border enhances visual balance and allows space for captions and artist information.

Clean & Functional Hanging System

A key part of exhibition preparation is ensuring each piece is ready to install straight out of the box.

For this job, we applied a baton and D-ring hanging system, which:

  • Allows for quick and secure wall installation
  • Keeps the artwork sitting flush against the wall
  • Distributes weight evenly across the panel
  • Supports repeat handling for touring exhibitions

Each backing strip was precisely positioned to ensure consistent hanging height across the full set.
